Teaching staff

The staff of the school is composed of multilingual teachers who have extensive experience in teaching Brazilian Portuguese to foreigners from all walks of life and countries. The team is led by Marcília Castro Carneiro who has been teaching Brazilian Portuguese for the last 12 years. During this time, Marcilia taught students from Germany, Switzerland, Iraq, Turkey, Australia and many other countries. All other teachers, all from former Casa do Brasil, have similar experience and credentials, making the school one of the best in Salvador for learning Brazilian Portuguese.

Pedagogical Approach

We, Casa do Brasil Language Learning, pride ourselves for being one of the first in adopting and implementing the "communicative approach" to teaching Brazilian Portuguese, whose ultimate goal is the formation of the communicative competence among our students. The goal of the specific curricular courses is to learn the language in greater depth and use the language as a means of communication, to propose situations that encourage the reflection and the construction of knowledge as a continuous process of learning. We help students develop their capacity to use, with efficiency, the basic oral and written skills of the linguistic system. The school uses carefully selected material to meet the primary goal: integrate the instruction of the Portuguese language with the Brazilian culture. In addition to using games, films, songs, etc., the students are invited to participate in outside activities in order to apply what they are learning, as well as to learn the Brazilian way of life authentically, as experienced by Brazilians. Complete advisement is offered to the student concerning his/her basic necessities including information about the city, tourist attractions, car rental and medical assistance. Extra-curricular cultural programs, as dance and capoeira, are also part of this advising process so that, along with the study of the language, a deeper interest in our city is awakened in the student. Comprehensive tests are taken in order to advance and a final examination is taken in order to obtain the diploma.

The curricular courses are divided as follows:

Course A: Basic

Course B: Basic – for students with some knowledge of Portuguese or speaking Spanish.

Course C: Intermediate

Course D: Advanced

Course E: Conversation

CELPE-Bras: the course will prepare you for all areas of the exam. Level of Portuguese needed for taking the exam: Intermediate

What does CELPE-Bras means?

The Certificate of Proficiency in Brazilian Portuguese for foreigners officially recognized and developed by the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC). The CELPE-Bras exam is applied in Brazil and other countries.

Duration of courses

The language courses are divided into units of 40 or 60 school hours (45 minutes each) per course. The courses are taught in intensive periods of 2 or more weeks, according to each student’s availability, from Monday through Friday.

Location and facilities

Casa do Brasil Language learning is located in Iguatemi area, on Avenida Tancredo Neves, one of the main avenues of the beautiful city of Salvador. The location is very convenient and easily accessible from the International Airport of Salvador. It is also close to the central bus station and to the two of biggest malls in Salvador, offering large food courts, restaurants, fast food, shops and movie theaters. There are several options of hotels and flats in the area. Only 10 minutes to the famous Jardim de Ala’s beach.
